St Lucia is an island 44km long and 22km wide located north of the islands of Saint Vincent and and south of Martinique, in the eastern Caribbean Sea.
The island was first visited by Europeans in around 1500 and was first colonized by France who signed a treaty with the Caribbeans in 1660.
From 1663 to 1667 Great Britain took control of the island, then St Lucia switched between British and French fourteen times before 1814, when British finally took complete control.
In 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state. The official language in Saint Lucia is English although French créole is commonly spoken.

St Lucia has a population of approx 152,000. Castries is the capital, with one third of the population of the island. Others major cities are Gros Islet, Soufrière and Vieux Fort.

The climate of St Lucia is tropical, moderated by northeast trade winds. The dry season extends from January to April and a the rainy season from May to December.
The average temperature varies from 25°C to 29°C.
